iZotope Ozone 6: Exciter | Mixing & Mastering Tip | Liam Shy

Are your mixes sounding a bit dull and flat?  Exciters like the Ozone 6 are a terrific way to add tasteful color, character and depth to your tracks.

In this video, Pyramind’s Ableton Live instructor and producer Liam Shy walks you through the iZotope Ozone 6 Exciter, a key part of his mastering chain.

First you’ll notice that the Ozone 6 Exciter is a multiband tool.  Liam explains why he likes to generally only use this plug-in on the highs and upper mids.  Then you will get walked through each of the six different modes the Ozone 6 gives you to choose from; Warm, Retro, Tape, Tube, Triode and Dual Triode.

The Ozone 6 Exciter is an essential tool for adding spice to the mids and highs in your mix. In Liam’s deep house vibey track you can really hear the differences between the modes, for instance the Retro and Tape modes really accentuate the shakers and hi hats in the mix. Tube mode is known for clear tonal excitation with an emphasis on dynamics and attack. The Triode and dual Triode modes are modeled after the 12az7 vacuum tube and they both add unique color to the frequency band they are applied to.
